End programs, tax breaks and subsidies that favor political insiders.
Ensure a level playing field for all to compete.
Washington elites and big business and big finance have grown too cozy, working together to enrich themselves, while leaving the American people and small businesses behind to pay the bill. I will oppose every bailout, special favor, and legal exemption for major corporations—and anyone else—so that everyone in America, regardless of background or political persuasion, is competing on a level playing field. A recent report from Open the Books revealed that between 2000 and 2012 the federal government doled out over $1.2 trillion to the top Fortune 100 companies. This is unacceptable. We need to end crony programs like the National Flood Insurance Program, The Import-Export Bank, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. These programs distort the free market while enriching those with strong ties to our elected officials and career bureaucrats.
Every bill passes through what they refer to in Congress as a “toll booth.” Not a single bill is allowed to get through committee without congress shaking down the affected parties—certified extortion. There is no better example of this than 2014’s HR 5771, a bill that encompasses all the crony tax deductions and tax credits. Congress dangles $600 billion of tax deductions, affecting everything from horse racing to Wall Street to ethanol, in return for campaign contributions. I pledge to expose this racket and restore congress to serving the people, not what my Claremont Institute colleague Angelo Codevilla calls, “The Ruling Class.”
